Call for volunteers

The Tartan Turban Secret Reading Series is volunteer-run, and we are constantly seeking volunteers for a variety of roles.

Roles

1. Session curators: curate a session of the Tartan Turban Secret Readings

2. Funding: Grant-writing and funding applications, donations management (requires experience)

3. Series Coordinators: coordinating with curators, features and open mic readers, publicity 

4. Event crew: In-person event-day crew (must be physically present in Toronto): set up, fold up, PA system, book sales assistance or management, photography/video/live streaming, and manage/oversee refreshments

5. Open mic coordinator: coordinating with open mic readers, sharing guidelines etc. 

6. Editors/editorial board: For eventual anthology (requires some experience as an editor)

7. Virtual event administration: tech and moderation

All roles report to the series curator and founder.

We centre Indigenous and global majority voices who have been denied access to power, privilege and a stage by the global minority.

Are you right for us?

Ideally, to be a volunteer, you must

  • love literature
  • support justice, inclusion, equity and access for equity-denied groups
  • support free speech and the rights of writers
  • support the creation of a safe space for equity-denied groups
  • be able to commit to the volunteer role for a 2-year term ideally
  • agree to abide by the TTSR Code of Conduct

Qualifications

You must have:

  • Familiarity with TTSR values and format
  • Experience organizing and/or volunteering for and/or familiarity with literary events
  • Some literary writing experience and/or publication 
  • Familiarity with the literary scene in Toronto and/or Canada
  • Social media and web skills 
  • Professionalism and people management skills 
  • Postgraduate degree from a Canadian or overseas university

Selection process

You are free to volunteer for multiple roles.
